Chapter Ten

Wesley sighed as he brought his truck to a stop outside Hannah’s house.

She wasn’t taking his calls, which was a sure sign she wanted nothing to do with him. Not that he blamed her. He’d made some pretty shitty assumptions throughout the whole decision-making process.

His wolf had been crawling on its belly, with its tail tucked firmly between its legs, ever since. He wasn’t sure their relationship could move past this—wasn’t sure he had any right to even if it could—but he had to apologize. Had to try to let Hannah know that his actions, though stupid, did come from a place of concern for Elsa. He had been trying to get her to just wait on going back to the caves, but when she told him the plan she’d made to sneak out at night, he knew he had to do something.

He now realized he should have told Hannah about this, should have tried to figure it out with her instead of taking matters into his own hands. But her fears were so beyond what he’d expected…

The question was, was it her or Elsa who had been molested? The thought of either one of them being harmed made his hair stand on end. It made him want to kill—not just attack, the way he’d done to Kent when he thought Kent had attacked Hannah. He wanted to lock his jaws around the throat of whoever hurt them and throw their dead body into a pit of maggots.

The porch light flicked on, and Hannah stepped out. Night had fallen, cool after such a hot day, and crickets chirped lazily. They wouldn’t be around for much longer.

Bracing himself, Wesley grabbed the chest they’d found in the cave and climbed from his truck. Hannah watched him approach, her arms crossed firmly over her chest. As he approached, he smelled tears on her, and he flinched. His wolf groveled even lower.

“Did you plant that?” Hannah asked when he reached the bottom of the stairs.

“No. There was a cavity near the painted raven covered in plaster,” he explained. “I think maybe your grandmother had been planning to have a treasure hunt for the kids or something.”

He put the chest on the porch. For as angry as Hannah was at him, she would want whatever her grandmother had left. She looked at it, her face in shadow, then let out a heavy breath. As though she had been holding in more shouting and swearing.

“I guess I should apologize,” she said. “For swearing at you.”

Wesley’s brows shot up. She was apologizing to him? “No. No, you don’t have to apologize. What I did was inexcusable. You had every right to shout and swear at me.”

“I overreacted.”

“Not from where I’m standing.”

Hannah frowned deeply at him, the shadows on her face making it crease even deeper.

“I’m the one who should be apologizing. What I did was inappropriate. Elsa told me she had her backpack all ready to go out to the caves by herself in the dead of night.
